New Trends in Library Marketing & Sales, New Ways to Collaborate


The ongoing digital revolution is allowing publishers to collaborate with libraries as never before, offering new partnering opportunities for your Library Rep or Sales Division, or your Marketing and Publicity team.

But what are the latest opportunities and innovations for collaboration, and what are the most effective options for the success of our books and related products in the library market?

Get insights from our regional key players on how libraries are transforming their relationships with publishers via the digital realm and through collaboration of outside-the-box events. Learn about key innovations such as the 3M Cloud Library, and discover their role in shaping digital libraries. Hear some tips on best practices on a variety of related topics for publishers today.

Our expert panel includes Kit Hadley, Director of the St. Paul Public Library, Tom Mercer, Cloud Library Marketing Manager at 3M, and Terri Souter, VP and Director of Marketing, Lerner Publishing, and VP of Brain Hive.
Panel Information

Kit Hadley was appointed the Director of the Saint Paul Public Library in August 2009. Previously, she served as the Director of the Minneapolis Public Library from March 2003 through 2007, where she led an initiative to secure approval for a merger with the Hennepin County Library. She participated in a successful $16.5 million capital campaign; implemented a $165 million capital improvement program, including completion of the new Central Library; strengthened community outreach and literacy initiatives; and redesigned and improved service to customers.

She has also served as the Executive Director of Heading Home Minnesota, where she led a collaborative to support the success of state, county and regional plans to end homelessness. From 1994 to 2002, she was the Commissioner of the Minnesota Housing Finance Agency, appointed by Governors Carlson and Ventura. She chairs the board of Youthprise, and serves on the boards of the Minneapolis Foundation, Hearth Connection, St. Paul Youth Services, and the Legal Services Advisory Committee.

Tom Mercer is the marketing manager for the 3M Cloud Library. Tom has worked in new product development and new product launches for over 11 years at 3M Company. He has a mixture of technical and business experience provides him a unique perspective on how to launch new technology products. Tom has spent a significant amount of time speaking with librarians and publishers about the future of eBooks and how eBooks will change library and consumer habits. He created the product roadmap for the 3M Cloud Library which has been received with high reviews for the library market and today over 80 library systems around the country are using the Cloud Library. Tom holds a B.S. in Electrical Engineering from North Dakota State University and a M.S. in Management of Technology from the University of Minnesota.

Terri Souter is VP and Director of Marketing for Lerner Publishing, as well as VP of Brain Hive, which provides an innovative eBook rental solution for K-12 libraries.

Parking Information
There is a small side lot next to the Open Book building (just past the building on the right as you are heading east on Washington; for those heading west, turn on 10th or 11th and go down the alley to access the lot). If the Open Book lot is full, other options are:
  • Meters along 10th and 11th; most cost $1.00/hour.
  • Guthrie ramp is a block away. Enter on 9th street (between Washington and 2nd Street South).
  • Municipal parking ramp across from the Mill City Museum (this is a longer walk because it is a block farther away and the entrance is on 2nd Street South).

Registration info
Registration begins at 11:30 a.m. The program starts at approximately 12:00 p.m. Fees, which include lunch, are $20 for members and $25 for non-members. Reservations required. If space allows walk-ins, those without reservations will be charged $30 at the door. If you reserve a place, a lunch will be ordered for you and you'll be expected to pay for it whether or not you attend.
