What do agents, publishers, and freelancers need to know to conduct more successful contract negotiations? In this panel discussion, three industry professionals will consider issues such as effective tone, areas of common disagreement, and clauses to watch out for. Participants will include freelance copyeditor and writer Paula L. Fleming, author business consultant and former agent Laurie Harper, and Hazelden Publishing's Executive Director of Operations, Lenny Peterson.

Paula L. Fleming is the founding partner of Fleming Editorial Services ( Paula began in the publishing industry 15 years ago as a freelance copyeditor. Today, Fleming Editorial continues to provide copyediting and proofreading services, and specializes in authoring content to support textbooks. Fleming Editorial also works with independent authors to produce print and e-books, providing services from ghostwriting to design and layout.

Laurie Harper has over 30 years experience in publishing, known to editors, agents, and authors alike. She is a published author, former small press publisher, literary agent for over 25 years, and now business consultant for writers.

Lenny Peterson has been with Hazelden Publishing for 27 years in various positions. He currently manages Hazelden Publishing Operations, which includes procurement, fulfillment services, royalties, rights and permissions, contracts, operating systems, and electronic and subscription products support.

Parking Information
There is a small side lot next to the Open Book building (just past the building on the right as you are heading east on Washington; for those heading west, turn on 10th or 11th and go down the alley to access the lot). If the Open Book lot is full, other options are:
  • Meters along 10th and 11th. Most cost $1.00/hour.
  • Guthrie ramp. Enter on 9th Avenue (between Washington and 2nd Street South).
  • Municipal parking ramp across from the Mill City Museum (this is a longer walk because it is a block farther away and the entrance is on 2nd Street South).

Registation Information
Registration begins at 11:15 a.m., a brief information session and vote about updates to MPBR bylaws will commence at 11:45 a.m., and the moderated panel discussion will begin at 12:00 p.m. Fees, which include lunch, are $20 for members and $25 for nonmembers. Reservations are required. If space allows walk-ins, those without reservations will be charged $30 at the door.If you reserve a place, a lunch will be ordered for you and you'll be expected to pay for it whether or not you attend.
